BE SCREEN SMART

Join The Early Years Institute
 3rd Annual Screen-Free Week!
(hosted by the Campaign for Commercial-Free Childhood (CCFC)

A national celebration where children, families, schools and communities spend seven days reducing time spent on screen-based entertainment media and turning on life. It's a time to BE SCREEN SMART and find alternative activities to play, explore, create and promote living a healthier lifestyle with family and friends. Play helps children build essential learning skills - constructive problem-solving, critical thinking, social competence, emotional maturity and communications skills.

The Early Years Institute welcomes CA Technologies as our 2013 Screen-Free Week "BE SCREEN SMART" presenting sponsor. In today's world, technology is crucial to doing business, yet it needs to be balanced with creative play for children to thrive and be ready to succeed in school and life.

The Play Again Video will share some shocking truth about children and screen time.

We, at The Early Years Institute and Screen-Free Week Committee, would like to provide you and your family with great places and alternative activities to go that are either free or at a discounted price.

Screen Free Week 2012 Testimonials

Just wanted to know that your email had a big impact yesterday. Z was getting addicted to Angry Birds Space and YouTube on the IPad. He was on the IPad ALL the time. Yesterday, the battery died down. I quietly put it away and when he asked about it, I said it was Screen Free Week, so no IPad. Weirdly, he accepted this with no questioning or complaints. Now we have our Z back again!

We may well retire the IPad completely from the house...the kids just like it TOO much... - Kim Nauer

My screen-free fears vanished on the very first night of the challenge week when my 11-year-old son said, "So, does this mean we can have family game night?" When I contemplated the screen-free challenge the night before, I fully prepared for the fight, the rolled eyes and maybe even tears, the backlash, and withdrawal symptoms of my two sons, Jonas and Noah, 8 and 11. I had planned and rehearsed a motivational speech, and was ready with rewards and, dare I say, bribes. What I got surprised me.Read more by Lisa Brandi
