The Adopt‐A‐Trail project started out as a way to encourage Drexel Avenue’s students, staff and community to exercise and explore nature in a unique environment. We have incorporated ten curriculum areas where students can review information learned in classrooms. Students visit different areas of the quarter mile walking trial to learn about living trees, plants and animals. We also have students learn about birds that make their home on the trail and study animal tracks left my inhabitants of the trail. We are also proud of our Salute America Garden, honoring our troops and veterans, which students visit during times of the year that focus on important dates in American history.
The trail exposes students to their responsibility of becoming stewards of our environment. Teachers and classes adopt a tree or section of the trail to maintain and make their own, creating a feeling of pride and ownership of the trail. Our trail also offers areas for large group exercise to encourage healthy lifestyles, as well as space for class reading sessions.
During the fall of 2010, we are embarking on a new program, the Walk and Talk Project, to help our students to engage with senior citizens in our community. The goal of this program is to build intergenerational relationships and respect in the Westbury community.
